will a motorbike restrictor damage the engine?
Question by Jed F: will a motorbike restrictor damage the engine?
i might get a cbr or something in a year. il be 17 so i could only drive a 125cc. could i get like a 600cc and have a restrictor on it and still be legal to ride it on the road? will it damage the engine?
peace.

Answer by Sjpüpål
Let me ask why can you only drive a 125cc?
I got a 600 as my first bike at 18 (i’m 21 now) and in my opinion it was PERFECT.
Not too much power, but enough to get you out of danger (cars coming into your lane etc)
Is there a law i’m not aware of?

Motorbike Insurance: are you Securely Covered?
Motorbike Insurance: are you Securely Covered?
Motorbikes are becoming a more and more popular method of commuting in cities throughout the UK as roads become grid-locked with cars, trucks, buses and roadworks! Yet motorbikes still manage to weave their way through traffic and reach their destination on time – highlighting another benefit that biking has in comparison to driving a car. Not only can a motorbike traverse spaces that would be impossible in a car, motorbikes are also cheaper to maintain, have better fuel economy and it is much easier to find parking spaces in busy areas. In 2006 there were over 1.1million motorbikes registered in the UK, a figure which has gradually grown as popularity for biking rises.
In the UK, it is a legal requirement to be insured when driving on public roads. So, whether you’re a commuter who uses a motorbike to squeeze past gridlocked cars to get to your work on time, or a recreational rider exploring the UK’s country roads at the weekends, you’ll need adequate insurance cover to keep yourself and others protected while on the road.
However, it’s not only when driving a motorbike that you need motorbike insurance. Due to the design and size of motorbikes, they can be stolen and removed by thieves far more easily than a car, and as a result most general insurance companies deem insuring motorbikes as a high risk. However some companies specialise in motorbike insurance and appreciate that this is not necessarily the case. In fact, providing the owner implements some basic security measures a motorbike can be as low risk to own as a car.
For example, motorbikes should be parked in well lit areas and the frame should be secured to a fixed object with a sturdy security chain. To further deter would-be thieves, fit an approved immobiliser to prevent the engine being started without the key, and install a Thatcham approved alarm. You could also have a tracking device fitted to help the Police track your motorbike in the event it should it be taken.
Owners should also buy an ultraviolet pen to mark their motorbike with personal details and keep a copy of the serial number of their motorbike, so that if their motorbike is stolen it can be traced back to the theives by the authorities. By taking precautions such as these, you can reduce your motorbike insurance premium.
The most common type of insurance chosen by owners is a comprehensive policy. This level of cover ensures that in the event of an accident the policy holder will be fully insured for the market value of their motorbike, as well as the repair cost of any damage caused to a third party by the policy holder. Some policies even cover policy holders for personal claims against them, which in today’s litigious climate is certainly a comforting safeguard. This ensures that if you are unfortunate enough to have an accident, you won’t have to cope with a huge financial burden too.

The Yamaha R1 Motorbike: Excellent Power and Mastery
The Yamaha R1 Motorbike: Excellent Power and Mastery
Yamaha R1 super-bike have gone through a good reputation as one of the top sport bikes out there over the previous 10 years. When crafting the 2009 Yamaha R1 motorbikes, the technicians were confronted with this puzzling question: How does one advance on flawlessness?
As Yamaha R1 motorcycles were already incorporating some of the best performing bike technological innovation of the day, there was just one reasonable solution to this question: Invent different know-how! In 2009, Yamaha R1 bikes have gone through a complete redesign to incorporate new innovations not seen on any other motorcycle.
First, let’s quickly cover the basic characteristics of 2009 Yamaha R1 motorcycles before getting sidetracked by specifying all the new technologies it benefits. 2009 Yamaha R1 motorcycles feature a liquid-cooled, 998 cc, inline four-cylinder, sixteen-valve DOHC engine. They have a six-speed manual transmission with a multi-plate slipper clutch. The Yamaha R1 engine is able of 180 horsepower at 12,500 rpm and 85 pound-feet (11.8 kilogram-meter) of torque at 10,000 rpm. The Yamaha R1 top speed has been documented by consumer at or around 190 mph (257.5 kph). All this power is presently available for less than ,500.Now, onto the new Yamaha R1 motorcycle technology for 2009! The 2009 Yamaha R1 motorcycles are the first to feature crossplane crankshaft technology in a two-wheel motorized unit. Crossplane crankshaft technology is a highly technical, very complicated machine, and a full explanation of it could easily fill its own article.
Therefore, we’ll try to describe it in the shortest, simplest term we can.In a classic engine, gasoline flame drives pistons in up-and-down movement. The pistons, in turn, drive the crankshaft. The crankshaft turns the reciprocal motion of the pistons into rotational action that ultimately turns the back wheel of the bike. This translation from reciprocal to rotational motion is never perfect. Energy is generally lost when motion shifts form, not to bring up a timing delay from the pistons shooting to the wheels turning. The greater the movement and energy (in this case, the RPMs), the greater the loss in energy and motion transfer. What this means to you as a motorcycle rider is that the fast you go, the less control your throttle has over the rear wheel.A crossplane cranksaft design takes a fully different approach. First, as a substitute of two sets of pistons firing alternately, this engine involves four sets of pistons firing in rotation. Second, the connection rods from pistons to crankshaft are placed at ninety degrees from one another around the crankshaft.
The firing order of the pistons is 270°-180°-90°-180°. The result of the right-angle location and non-liner firing chain is that the exchange of energy and action from the pistons to the rear wheel is much more clean and exact. What this means for you as a motorbike driver is that your accelerator pedal has much more management of the rear wheel, allowing a steady, linear acceleration and smoother handling of the motorbike, even at increased speeds.Another innovation in 2009 Yamaha R1 motorbikes is a forced-air consume system. This system increases air intake effectiveness by using the organic airflow generated when riding to pressurize the air in the air cleaner container. As more air in the engine generates more strength, the new R1 engine has outstanding power, especially at high speeds.Yamaha has also developed the chip-controlled throttle and intake technology from racetrack motorcycles. This merges computer technology with the driver’s throttle control for electronic micro-control of the fuel injection and air intake systems.
The end result is a throttle response that is both immediate and precise. Together, all these hi-tech progress in 2009 Yamaha R1 motorcycles give more power and speed, and higher pilot control at the same time. What’s not to enjoy?Since one can’t completely redesign the engine without redesigning the frame, Yamaha has done that as well, including many new improvements. It includes an aluminum frame precisely well-balanced for the combo of both stiffness and flex that a racing bike demands. It also includes crafted aluminum pistons, a lightweight titanium intake valve, and electronically actuated steering dampeners.Regardless of of 2009 Yamaha R1 motorcycles’ advantages and innovations, including great acceleration, outstanding responsiveness, and heightened maneuverability, it has its drawbacks like any motor vehicle.
Some buyers report discovering it to be unpleasant when travelling or driving long distances. The bike gives off a lot of warmth, which can get not comfortable at low speeds, or in the stop-and-start nature of rush hour area traffic. On the other hand, some people may argue, 2009 Yamaha R1 motorcycles are not built for commuting – they are built for racing. If you’re looking to commute in comfort and ease, go acquire a minivan.

Motorbikes ? Opt for 2 Wheels Instead of 4
Motorbikes ? Opt for 2 Wheels Instead of 4
A look into why there have been more choosing motorbikes over cars in the last few years.
Over the years there has been a rise in motorbike sales, does this mean more people are opting for motorbikes instead of sports cars during a mid life crisis or are their other reasons behind this? The main reasons behind more and more people buying motorbikes are that they are generally cheaper to buy and run than cars.
You can pick up new high spec motorbike for around £10,000, which is the price you would pay for a lower end car and because motorbikes have smaller engines so you would also qualify for cheaper road tax. When it comes to fuel consumption there have been reports of motorbikes gaining up to 33% more miles per litre, which could make a huge difference in your monthly budget.
There is also the performance of motorbikes, because a motorbike is smaller, lighter and the engine only has to power one wheel the acceleration is a lot quicker than most cars. Other performance factors include better breaking and manoeuvrability.
If you are looking for a motorbike but have a limited budget there is always the option of buying second hand, even though motorbikes hold their value a lot better than cars there are still a lot of good cheap motorbikes for sale.
The best places to look for second hand motorbikes would be specialist magazines, online auctions and best of all online classified ads, where the majority of owners will list their motorbikes allot cheaper due to the desperation to sell.
You might think why they are trying to sell these bikes quickly; the reasons are usually a lot more legit than people selling cars as there becomes a point where owning a bike is not a viable option for some.

Question by RJ: Is it possible to change the engine on a motorbike to a more powerful one?
I own a Kinroad XT50 50cc Chopper at the moment and due to my age it has to remain as such until I’m 17 in October but next year I want to take a full motorcycle license test on a 125cc but I like the design of my Kinroad, so here is my question; Is it possible to remove the engine and replace it with a 125cc engine? Or is there more to it than simply replacing the engine?
Best answer:
Answer by elbobbo
I had a friend who had a 50cc on/off road bike that he upped to a 125cc, he made a few more modifications to it as well and it used to fly! So yes it is possible but there may be other things to consider (ie how big your frame is etc)
Hope this helps

www.veloce.co.uk. By tradition, the motorcycle is a naked beast, differing from other vehicles by the fact that its mechanical structure is also part of its aesthetic appearance. In The Fine Art of the Motorcycle Engine, photographer Daniel Peirce examines the graphic nature of historic engines with stunning and dramatic photography. Since the beginning of the motorbike, engine designers knew they had to design power plants that performed well and looked good. Peirce presents 64 stunning pictures from his popular UP-N-SMOKE Engine Project. In addition to his engine photography, the book also includes the story of the project and the years it took to take it from an inspired idea to a tangible reality.
Is there any diffs with car oil & motorbike engine oil ? can i use car oil on my motor 400cc ?
Question by mojoflox: Is there any diffs with car oil & motorbike engine oil ? can i use car oil on my motor 400cc ?
if there is a difference, how is it diff ? Also what is the 20W/50 ? Its viscosity but what does the W and the numbers mean?
Best answer:
Answer by NY1Krr
Yes, there is a difference. If your motorcycle has a wet clutch (most do) you can only use motorcycle oil.
The difference is on the back of the bottle. There is a ring printed on the back and in the ring it says “energy conserving”. That means that there are additives that may affect how your motorcycles clutch works.
I’ve heard of people using car oil with no problems but if I were you, I would spend the extra money on motorcycle specific oil.

Motorbike Restoration: Classics
Motorbike Restoration: Classics
Many accessory shops make a business out of it by knowing something about motorbike restoration. Very few have mastered this art and crave for perfection in the field of motorbike restoration.
Motorbike Restoration – Art of Re-creating a Baby
The three basic things for any motorbike restoration project are:

The engine

The frame

Manufacturer\’s parts book

Consider your bike like a baby. Imagine you had a chance at re-creating a baby, motorbike restoration is a bit like having the opportunity to re-create a perfect baby.
Consider the engine and frame to be the heart of the baby. The parts book which has the exploded diagrams is the baby\’s heart. This is where the craftsmanship of a motorbike restorer adds value. With strong expertise in the field of restoration, you will find that a restorer will understand the internal dynamics of a bike. Then with good quality craftsmanship you can ensure that all the parts of the bike are mechanically polished and replaced. With an end to end quality check, your bike will be superior to showroom quality.
Top 10 Motorbike Restoration Tips from the experts:

Get your motor cleaned and if it is older enough, get it re-built

The bright metal parts have to be mechanically polished

Examine your frame for cracks, twists, acid damage. Get the welding proper if needed

Get your frame dry assembled along with the cleaned or newly re-built engine

Go for stainless steel bolts since cadmium bolts will rust under dampen conditions

Replace every nut and bolt for every section of the bike except the engine and frame

Check your forks for wear and tear. Your forks should also be straight

Replace your shock absorbers if needed. This must be easy as shocks for all brands are easily available in the market

Replace your tyres if needed, preferably with a modern one which is made in the same country

After restoration, make sure that you ride your bike. Without riding your bike and checking the quality of the restoration, you will have to restore the bike again sooner rather than later

These are the basic things which need to be considered when a motorbike is restored. Anyone can restore a bike with these tips. But restoring the motorbike with an art of perfection needs an expert.
If the motorbike restoration is done perfect, you will be flashed backed into the past where you and your bike were young. After all, you can see the value of your motorbike increasing faster than your stocks!

Question by Gareth D: Where in the UK can I find a good used motorbike search engine?
With the exception of Biketrader (autotrader) and motorcyclesupermarket. If it helps, I am looking for a yamaha virago 535 or a Yamaha xvs Dragstar 650. Thanks
To Jack – you tit – while the grammar is not prescriptive, it is descriptive, which means if you bother to read on and place the question in its wider context it makes sense enough.

11 Reasons Why Motorbikes Are More Fun
Motorcycle riders have long been popular for their display of toughness and pure machismo. As much as cars have dominated the roads, it is the motorcycle riders that ruled and lived on the road, pretty much comparable to the appeal of all-American cowboys. We surely heard enough motorcycle adventure stories from our fathers and grandfathers. Back then, riding a motorbike holds a bold statement, giving an impression of pure toughness. Nowadays, modern riders are increasing in number. For one thing, riding motorbikes is 11 ways more fun than driving cars.
Reason #1
Riders are road’s main attractions. Riding a motorbike complete with a helmet and riding outfit creates a picture that is beyond ordinary. It’s the image that riders create that makes motorbikes more interesting.
Reason #2
The adrenalin or excitement you get from a motorbike is ten times more than what you get from riding a car. For one thing, it leaves you bare on the road, putting your raw driving skills to test. These bikes do not have power steering or auto-features, giving the riders full command on the road.
Reason #3
It presents a great way of beating the traffic. It can go anywhere and everywhere, except on sidewalks. In this regard, motorcycles are ideal traffic solutions. (please take law into consideration in your country)
Reason #4
Generally, motorbikes run faster than cars. It has to have something to do with the platform, weight, engine and design aspects that enable the more compact ride run faster than conventional cars.
Reason #5
Riding a motorbike takes a lot more concentration and focus. It needs its rider to focus on maintaining balance while operating the engine, making no room for distractions such as cell phones, smoking or talking.
Reason #6
Motorbikes spell adventure better than cars. It gives the rider more control on the road. Compared to cars, bikes give better views of sceneries.
Reason #7
Bikes are comfortable to ride. More comfort can be enjoyed by investing on accessories, attachments or add-ons.
Reason #8
Similar to cars, motorbike saddlebags, luggage racks or panniers allows you to accommodate everything you need in your road adventures.
Reason #9
Believe it or not, motorbikes can sit in up to 10 people, depending on the engine power and the design of the side-car it attaches to.
Reason #10
Motorbikes are sporting a powerful and fuel-efficient engine yielding outstanding fuel mileage and huge savings. In hope of reducing the world’s fuel consumption, electric motorbikes are now slowly gaining popularity, thanks to the auto manufacturers efforts to ‘go green’.
Reason #11
Motorcycle models are available in sleek and fashionable 2-wheel and 3-wheel designs. In addition, they are also customizable. Sprucing up a motorcycle not only appreciates its market value but also its rider’s appeal.
Traditionally, motorcycles were referred as naked beasts, their dominating presence and road adventures are forever printed in the history. They have defined adventure more than any piece of machine had. Hence, motorcycle riders enjoy more, they get more of the excitement and fun of threading down the road and they pretty much get more out of life.

Question by Papillon: Could i use a motorbike engine to power the propeller on a very small plane or ultralight?
what would i need to do to make this work? any advice appreciated
tia
Best answer:
Answer by WINGMAN
Simple answer is yes, tia.
I don’t answer that way.
Lets make a list of positives and negatives on using a motorbike engine.
Positives:
(1) If you have a two stroke, money saved in not buying one.
…. A four stroke would work but weighs more than a two stroke.
…. Equals less payload capacity.
(2) Whops, no more positives that I can think of.
Negatives:
(1) The motorbike engine has an unnecessary transmission = extra weight.
(2) Not knowing your level of expertise, an expensive shaft adapter with bearings
…. needs fabricated to connect the transmission output shaft to a multiple shiv.
…. the propeller shiv and bearing assembly you can purchase unless you already
…..have a plane,
(3) Weight distribution, ie proper mounting of the engine fore and aft so as to not
…..critically effect the planes design limits.
(4) All kinds of custom brackets will need to be built to mount everything.
…..Can you handle this?
Your life depends on all of the above.
Question:
Does the motorbike engine have a electric starter?
I can not visualize standing on a wing to kick start it.
I am sure I have over looked other important considerations. I know you are looking
for a really positive answer, but I would not attempt it.
There is nothing wrong with your idea, but the math and safety issues will be
taking, in my humble opinion, too big of a risk.
Sorry, please read my source data below.

Question by sara t: 2001 kawasaki motorbike – must the engine be run before driving off and before parking up?
my neighbour has a 2001 kawasaki motorbike, I think it is at least 600cc. He runs his engine before he drives off and when he parks, regardless of the weather and I think he does this because it’s fun for him. Am I wrong? Is there actually a technical need to do this?

Answer by VikingLord
I think you mean he “revs” his engine. He DOES do it to be cool. There is no practical reason to revving the engine in this manner.
