Learner-legal bikes on a budget: recommendations?

2539695918 87a12592a3 m Learner legal bikes on a budget: recommendations?I am looking at buying a 125 as a town runabout, as my big 2L car is such a waste of fuel for in-town trips and such a pain to find/pay for parking.

I have my CBT certificate, so I am only interested in learner-legals. I want a geared bike as I want to get some practise and experience for when I take DAS in 6-9 months or so when I’ve saved up enough money.

My budget is about £1200-1500 for bike, full set of kit (except helmet, I have one) and TPFT insurance.

I don’t want a 2-stroke (e.g. Aprilia), and would rather stick with established manufacturers than Chinese copies.

I am also 5″6 tall and might find bikes with a huge seat height difficult.

I have narrowed it down to the CG125 or YBR125. The CBR125 is nice and gets great reviews, but probably too expensive (same for the Varadero 125).

Opinions on which is better? Any other models I should be looking at? How much have other members spent on similar bikes?

Custom Motorcycle Helmets For You

2750778667 07fddfed38 m Custom Motorcycle Helmets For You

If you are looking for a custom motorcycle helmet, there are many shops that can make one for you. There are a lot of motorcycle helmets you can choose from. With many designs and makers to choose from, you would surely have your hands full finding one that you will like. Different designs offer different levels of comfort and styling. There are different types of motorcycle helmets available for different types of rides.

One of the more common motorcycle helmet types is the full face helmet. This type of motorcycle helmet covers the whole head and provides the most extensive head protection to the rider. A rear extension of this type of helmet covers the base of the skull while the front tries to protect the chin. A plastic face shield allows protection to the eyes and nose and provides access to the face if pushed up. Riders would usually experience of heat, claustrophobic sensation and reduced hearing while using the full face motorcycle helmet.

Then there is the ¾ motorcycle helmet, also known as the open face helmet. This type of helmet, just like the full face helmet, covers the back of the skull but gets rid of the lower chin armor and face shield in order to provide better airflow, hearing and peripheral vision. As added protection, most open face helmets are equipped with visors that help block out sunlight. For the eyes, it is always recommended to use goggles or wrap around sunglasses as a means of protection.

There is also the half helmet that would give you the most minimum coverage allowed by motorcycle helmet law. This type of helmet has the same front design as the open face helmet but with a cropped rear portion. The use of goggles and sunglasses can provide additional protection to the rider, just like the open face helmet. Before buying this kind of helmet, make sure that it meets the government standard for motorcycle helmet safety.

But if among the hundreds of motorcycle helmet designs available do not have the features that you want, you can have one custom made just for you. Custom made motorcycle helmets are for those with special needs. They are for people who look for a unique type of helmet in terms of design or shape.

Styling is also the reason why many people would want to have custom motorcycle helmets instead. No matter what you choose, make sure that what you are using can provide you with the level of safety and protection required by motorcycle law. These helmets are made for your protection much more than just for looks. That is what you should always bear in mind.

5 Favorite Styles of Motorcycle Helmets

1433231433 3d8b54bdea m 5 Favorite Styles of Motorcycle Helmets

Most motorcycle helmets are made from fiberglass or carbon fiber which is a very durable material. You can also find motorcycle helmets made from leather, chrome and stainless steel. Once you have chosen your helmet style and what material you want it made from, you then get to choose its appearance. You can purchase your helmet in stock condition, or you can choose to purchase a custom made helmet. Even if you initially purchase a stock helmet, you can always take it at a later date and have it painted and customized. Here are the top five helmet styles on the market that are favorites among motorcycle riders.

5. The Full Face Motorcycle Helmet

This helmet is for those that want complete coverage. The full face helmet offers the most protection as it covers the entire head and has a face shield. The face shield is extremely convenient for keeping bugs and weather conditions such as rain and snow out of the riders face. These are most often made from a fiberglass material and come in a wide variety of colors.

4. The Half Motorcycle Helmet

This style is for those that still want good head protection, but don’t like having a full face shield in their face. It provides a partial face shield that will help shield the forehead and the eyes from insects and bad weather. The half motorcycle helmet is generally found made from fiberglass, though you can sometimes find it in other materials as well. It is also available in many different colors and styles.

3. The Open Face Motorcycle Helmet

This helmet closely resembles the half motorcycle helmet, but has a little less face and head coverage. This helmet is popular for riders that frequently take moderate to long rides, as it provides good head coverage, but keeps their face in the breeze. This is another helmet that is generally made from fiberglass though you can often order it in another custom material as well.

2. The Shorty Motorcycle Helmet

This helmet provides the least amount of head coverage, covering only the top portion of the head. This helmet style is popular for riders that enjoy cruising at lower speeds on cruising or touring bikes. This helmet is the popular choice for carbon fiber, stainless steel and chrome, though you can also easily find it in fiberglass as well. For some reason, these helmets often come in a standard color of the material they are made from, though you can also easily have it painted and customized.

1. The Novelty Style Helmet

There are many types of novelty style helmets including the Jockey, German and Kaiser style. These helmets generally offer limited head protection but are quite popular among riders that want something a little different than the norm. There are no hold barred with the novelty style motorcycle helmet. You can find these helmets made in almost any material with any kind of paint job.

What future alternatives might there be to the jetpack vision for solo bodied human flight ?

443213729 1b90057692 m What future alternatives might there be to the jetpack vision for solo bodied human flight ?Many of us have wanted to fly, like superman. It will never be possible to fly quite as fast – but I wouldn’t be suprised if sometime within human existence, in the next few thousand years – given the industrial development we have surpassed over the last 200 years; eventually, there must be an environmentally sustainable way – for humans to fly with great agility.

We may wear a form of suit to protect our skin from atmospheric pressure, and a helmet with compressed oxygen flowing, to allow us to breath. The jet may be using hydrogen as a fuel or something, but obviously to create such a lift it will probably be impossible without burning our asses off.

What do you think? Can it be possible? Maybe the device can have thousands of minicomputers on board like the typhoon – allowing it to remain aero dynamic.

I’m just throwing this one out there.

Is a scooter feasible for my commute? How about motorcycle recommendations?

2704569792 b96c2f11e7 m Is a scooter feasible for my commute? How about motorcycle recommendations?I’m an avid motorcyclist in the warmer months of the year. My problem is two-fold:

1. My bike is as old as me (24 years old) and is a BMW, thus the maintenance that is increasingly required is getting pretty expensive for my budget. Plus, the 750cc triple (it’s a K75, if you’re curious) doesn’t get great gas mileage, so it’s not like the fuel savings offset the increased maintenance costs associated with riding this beast to work as often as possible.

2. I have very little in the way of versatile riding gear. I have one good leather jacket and decent boots (not m/c specific, though). I have a good full-face helmet. When it rains overnight, I’ll come into work with my pants damp from the knee down due to road spray.

This leads me to ask: Could a scooter or maxi-scooter work on my commute? I have to travel about 25 miles one-way (50 round-trip) on a road with a 55 mph max speed limit to get to work, with the last third of the trip on city streets with a max speed ranging from 35 to 45 mph. I realize 55 is about as fast as most traditional sub-250cc scooters will go. But I’m drawn to the extra rain protection (not to mention the storage space) of the maxi-scooters like the Suzuki Bergman.

If not a maxi-scooter, how about a good economical motorcycle? I’ve long been attracted to the Honda Nighthawk 250. Granted, it has drum brakes and is a little on the smallish side, but it’s cheap to service and gets great gas mileage (about 20 mpg better than the BMW I currently ride, for what it’s worth.) I’m also drawn to Royal Enfield’s new bikes, which look very vintage and supposedly get great fuel economy– though perhaps they cost a fair deal more to keep running, from what I’ve heard.

What’s your scooter or motorcycle recommendation for this frugal commuter?

Scooter wont start, very smokey?

2539695918 87a12592a3 m Scooter wont start, very smokey? My 50cc Scooter (2nd hand, 2001 model) won’t start again this morning, it started doing this about a week ago but has been starting after several attempts until this morning when it just stopped.

I asked a question about this same scooter back in December and at the time (late Dec) had a brand new Carb fitted and in early December had a new spark plug fitted and the scooter de-restricted.

Earlier this week, for the first time since new carb, the scooter wouldn’t start at first attempt in the morning, after a couple of tries with the electric starter though it kicked in. It’s always been a little smokey (i’ve been told it means it’s running too rich but don’t have the tool to adjust the fuel/air mixture on the carb) so haven’t worried about that too much.

On Friday night on my way home from work it suddenly lost power on the A4 at 40mph until I released it to half throttle and it seemed ok again, then at the next set of traffic lights it just conked out slowly, first a very very weak turnover noise before stopping completely.

After an hour of sitting around miles from home it started again, hurrah, and made it back. Yesterday it ran fine though the oil light came on so this morning I put some more in it (2 stroke) and I ran out of petrol (so put some in last night – the petrol warning light does not work).

Then (finally there – sorry about the long story) this morning it just wouldn’t start after 15 mins of trying and putting in new oil (after several attempts remember last nights light so stuck about 1/2-3/4 of a litre in). It managed to get to the really really weak turn over noise again, at this stage loads of smoke coming out the exhaust, almost sounded like a backfire at one point too but not sure as had helmet on.

Any idea what could be causing this after such short period since new carb + spark plug? What would cause a possible backfire? Where can I get a tool to adjust the fuel/air mixture and pleaaase help me icon smile Scooter wont start, very smokey?
Hi BMW,

Thanks for advice. Whats “the plug” – do you mean the Spark Plug? Also it ran for a further 20 miles after I filled up with Petrol once it ran out, would this not negate the problem of unmixed oil this morning?
