Learner-legal bikes on a budget: recommendations?

2539695918 87a12592a3 m Learner legal bikes on a budget: recommendations?I am looking at buying a 125 as a town runabout, as my big 2L car is such a waste of fuel for in-town trips and such a pain to find/pay for parking.

I have my CBT certificate, so I am only interested in learner-legals. I want a geared bike as I want to get some practise and experience for when I take DAS in 6-9 months or so when I’ve saved up enough money.

My budget is about £1200-1500 for bike, full set of kit (except helmet, I have one) and TPFT insurance.

I don’t want a 2-stroke (e.g. Aprilia), and would rather stick with established manufacturers than Chinese copies.

I am also 5″6 tall and might find bikes with a huge seat height difficult.

I have narrowed it down to the CG125 or YBR125. The CBR125 is nice and gets great reviews, but probably too expensive (same for the Varadero 125).

Opinions on which is better? Any other models I should be looking at? How much have other members spent on similar bikes?

What future alternatives might there be to the jetpack vision for solo bodied human flight ?

443213729 1b90057692 m What future alternatives might there be to the jetpack vision for solo bodied human flight ?Many of us have wanted to fly, like superman. It will never be possible to fly quite as fast – but I wouldn’t be suprised if sometime within human existence, in the next few thousand years – given the industrial development we have surpassed over the last 200 years; eventually, there must be an environmentally sustainable way – for humans to fly with great agility.

We may wear a form of suit to protect our skin from atmospheric pressure, and a helmet with compressed oxygen flowing, to allow us to breath. The jet may be using hydrogen as a fuel or something, but obviously to create such a lift it will probably be impossible without burning our asses off.

What do you think? Can it be possible? Maybe the device can have thousands of minicomputers on board like the typhoon – allowing it to remain aero dynamic.

I’m just throwing this one out there.

Is a scooter feasible for my commute? How about motorcycle recommendations?

2704569792 b96c2f11e7 m Is a scooter feasible for my commute? How about motorcycle recommendations?I’m an avid motorcyclist in the warmer months of the year. My problem is two-fold:

1. My bike is as old as me (24 years old) and is a BMW, thus the maintenance that is increasingly required is getting pretty expensive for my budget. Plus, the 750cc triple (it’s a K75, if you’re curious) doesn’t get great gas mileage, so it’s not like the fuel savings offset the increased maintenance costs associated with riding this beast to work as often as possible.

2. I have very little in the way of versatile riding gear. I have one good leather jacket and decent boots (not m/c specific, though). I have a good full-face helmet. When it rains overnight, I’ll come into work with my pants damp from the knee down due to road spray.

This leads me to ask: Could a scooter or maxi-scooter work on my commute? I have to travel about 25 miles one-way (50 round-trip) on a road with a 55 mph max speed limit to get to work, with the last third of the trip on city streets with a max speed ranging from 35 to 45 mph. I realize 55 is about as fast as most traditional sub-250cc scooters will go. But I’m drawn to the extra rain protection (not to mention the storage space) of the maxi-scooters like the Suzuki Bergman.

If not a maxi-scooter, how about a good economical motorcycle? I’ve long been attracted to the Honda Nighthawk 250. Granted, it has drum brakes and is a little on the smallish side, but it’s cheap to service and gets great gas mileage (about 20 mpg better than the BMW I currently ride, for what it’s worth.) I’m also drawn to Royal Enfield’s new bikes, which look very vintage and supposedly get great fuel economy– though perhaps they cost a fair deal more to keep running, from what I’ve heard.

What’s your scooter or motorcycle recommendation for this frugal commuter?

Scooter wont start, very smokey?

2539695918 87a12592a3 m Scooter wont start, very smokey? My 50cc Scooter (2nd hand, 2001 model) won’t start again this morning, it started doing this about a week ago but has been starting after several attempts until this morning when it just stopped.

I asked a question about this same scooter back in December and at the time (late Dec) had a brand new Carb fitted and in early December had a new spark plug fitted and the scooter de-restricted.

Earlier this week, for the first time since new carb, the scooter wouldn’t start at first attempt in the morning, after a couple of tries with the electric starter though it kicked in. It’s always been a little smokey (i’ve been told it means it’s running too rich but don’t have the tool to adjust the fuel/air mixture on the carb) so haven’t worried about that too much.

On Friday night on my way home from work it suddenly lost power on the A4 at 40mph until I released it to half throttle and it seemed ok again, then at the next set of traffic lights it just conked out slowly, first a very very weak turnover noise before stopping completely.

After an hour of sitting around miles from home it started again, hurrah, and made it back. Yesterday it ran fine though the oil light came on so this morning I put some more in it (2 stroke) and I ran out of petrol (so put some in last night – the petrol warning light does not work).

Then (finally there – sorry about the long story) this morning it just wouldn’t start after 15 mins of trying and putting in new oil (after several attempts remember last nights light so stuck about 1/2-3/4 of a litre in). It managed to get to the really really weak turn over noise again, at this stage loads of smoke coming out the exhaust, almost sounded like a backfire at one point too but not sure as had helmet on.

Any idea what could be causing this after such short period since new carb + spark plug? What would cause a possible backfire? Where can I get a tool to adjust the fuel/air mixture and pleaaase help me icon smile Scooter wont start, very smokey?
Hi BMW,

Thanks for advice. Whats “the plug” – do you mean the Spark Plug? Also it ran for a further 20 miles after I filled up with Petrol once it ran out, would this not negate the problem of unmixed oil this morning?

Motorcycles: Harley Davidson Question, 1990 Sportster 1200?

Motorcycles: Harley Davidson Question, 1990 Sportster 1200?Ok, I wrote an introduction to this quesiton that was longer than some books, so I just started over because otherwise I’d never get any answers ’cause the intro was longer than the freaking question itself. I’ll try to keep it “to the point”, but I have always had trouble with that. I ramble. I’m a rambler and I rant. I’m a ranter, putting in millions of details that have nothing to due with the topic. OK – my dad buys his second motorcycle as he is wanting to get into riding. I have been riding every year weather permitting for 13 year and I know my way around a bike pretty good. I have never owned a harley davidson, only Yamaha’s and kawasaki’s. The first bike my dad bought was a Kawasaki. He’s been taking riding lessons from me for free, and he also signed up for a course at our local community college that is taught by guys who’ve been riding for centuries, and they’ll teach him things that even I don’t know. So one day we are driving and there’s a sparkling clean sportster (1200 XLH) sitting on the side of the road (“for sale sign clearly visible”). I call the number and offer the guy $3000 as it’s a 1990 and has 15,000 miles on it, although the bike is FLAWLESS and loaded with aftermarket shiny things, although all moving parts are stock. He accepts. I tell him that it’s actually my dad who is interested and I’ll have him call back later. He does, and sets up a test ride (to be performed by me) the next day. We go, I ride (I ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS wear a helmet), but I didn’t on this test ride because I had to be able to hear EVERYTHING IN THE ENGINE, ETC. So I ride for about 10 minutes and the bike is in such incredible condition I just can’t believe it. I report back and dad agrees to buy it on the spot. The next day he pays the guy and get’s the temp tag and insures it. Tonight I went down and picked it up. While we were in the guys large and spotless garage, fully equipped with about 10 motorcycles, 3 cars, and 4 toolbenches, I didn’t see the expected accompanyment of tool kits. So I figure he outsources his maintainence. Ok. I turn the fuel switch to “on” from “off”, and all of a sudden the bike is literally purging the entire tank of gas out of what appears to be a 1/4 inch rubber hose that someone had threaded between those iconic thin metal bars that run vertically from the crankcase up each side of the cylinders. The hose STARTS at the bottom of the air filter, although I don’t thing it has anything to do with it and runs up direcly to the “OFF/ON/RESERVE” switch. So I quickly switch it off, and it stops leaking. The seller is horrified because he’s already been paid and we haven’t even taken possession yet, 2. The bike didn’t do this when I rode it the day before, and 3. his dog bit my dad in the ass when he went over to pay him (and my dad is a lawyer, “bad combination of events”). So we spend 40 minutes trying to figure out first of all what the hell that hose is anyway…. Why is it now leaking fuel copiously, and was it originally connected to something else? did it become disconnected? Next I decide “ok, let’s take it just outside of the garage, fire it up with the switch on “off”, then turn it “on”, which we did, and it still pissed fuel all over the ground. By this time I’d removed it from it’s previous position up against the base of the outside of the lower part of the block (too hot for rubber hose, obviously), and I’d zip-tied it so it wouldn’t touch the exhaust either. Ok, WTF!!!!???? So, in a last ditch attempt to just GET IT HOME, I decided to clamp it off. Between the 2 of us we decided to use a paper clamp (not clip, CLAMP), those black things with the little silver handles to open and close them that can be used to pinch other people for fun at the office. We also screwed a screw of slightly larger diameter than the inside of the hose into the end of it, and…… drumroll… IT STILL LEAKED, SOMEHOW, but to a lesser degree. He followed me home and the performance of the bike was severely compromised. I had to keep it revved at stop signs and it felt like it was missing on one of the cylinders occasionally. SO: WHAT IS THIS HOSE, WHAT IS IT’S PURPOSE, AND WHAT’S IT SUPPOSED TO DO? IS IT SUPPOSED TO BE HOOKED TO SOMETHING? IF SO, WHAT? PLEASE. I WILL RECANT ALL MY YEARS OF RIDING JAP BIKES IF SOMEONE WILL PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. Otherwise, I’m going to have to pay someone to do it and they might die of laughter from how stupid I am that I couldn’t figure it out on my own. This bike is beautiful and I’m really hoping that it doesn’t reinforce the rumor that Harley’s are hanger queens (which is the only reason I hadn’t bought one myself prior to this bike). I know that there is someone out there who can answer this in the blink of an eye. Also the oil/filter and plugs haven’t been changed in friggin’ trillions of years so I’m going to do that as soon as I can get the right plugs for it. I bought a case of 4 cycle bike oil about 3 years ago and I still haven’t
used it all, so this oil change should finish it off. That maintainence I can do myself, but if I end up having to take the bike to my mechanic to have this hose thing figured out, I’ll just have them change the plugs/oil/filter. Well, that about does it. If I remember anything else I’ll post an update. Thank you all in advance for your help. I’m sorry I’m such a dumb-ass but this is my first Harley and I’m still basically a Harley virgin so I haven’t found the g-spot on them yet. Thx, john in Iowa

Super pocket bike made legal in PA…can it be done if i get a good bike?

Super pocket bike made legal in PA...can it be done if i get a good bike?If the bike has headlights, high beams and low beams and turn signals and a horn it should be able to be registered as a LSV low speed vehicle.

it can be registered for street use in many states. Most of our customers who have wanted to register these bikes for street use have been able to do so. You may need to add a license plate holder and/or rear-view mirrors, or other minor modifications. These items are inexpensive, can be found at most local scooter or motorcycle shops, and are easily attached via simple modifications.

All vehicle(s) come with a factory standard Certificate of Origin (Manufacturer Statement of Origin/MSO) which may be used for registration. We also include an official MSO for registration, with no extra charge for this service.

^^From what the site says ..the bigger super bike that i am getting, not to be confused with the smaller 50 cc models should be able to be street legal.

These are the rules in Florida…but i am in PA hopefully it is the same.

0. Have a motorcycle licence ( for a 110cc it is classified as a motorcycle)- you could try to say to say its 50cc then you dont need one but the certificate will probably say its 110cc.. You will not be required to bring the bike in to the DMV or ever do a riding test for anyone.
1. Headlights, taillights, sideview mirrors, signals, licence plate holder
2. Helmet- if you plan on not buying insurance ( you will defenetally not want to pay the price of the bike each month just on insurance r u nuts!!)
If you dont use helmet, you must have insurance. Cops can pull u over if you ride on streets where there will defenetally be cops, local neihborhood driving you can do without helmet with no cops near.)
3. Bring your factory standard Certificate of Origin (Manufacturer Statement of Origin/MSO) it is the important paperwork the bike comes with
4. Bring your ID
5. Bring $ it will cost $30.00 to put a Licence plate on it which includes the years stickers ( you will have to pay extra each year for new stickers)
6. Bring another $29.75 to get the bike registered
7, Bring some more money of 7% extra of the original purchase price. ( so if bike was bought for $500.00 you will have to pay extra $35.00 at the DMV.)

FOLLOWING THESE STEPS WILL GUARANTEE YOU TO LEGALLY RIDE ON ANY of the X series Mid Bikes( with minor modifications) on PUBLIC ROAD ( except highway)

so a total of about at least $100.00 of registration fees, not including your modification fees is all thats required to ride the bike legally.

BTW: it may sound like im answering my own question but im not about to drop 700 bucks on a super bike and not be able to ride it.

thanks.
