Question by Elizabeth: Motorbike/Scooter Total Newb Needs Advice, Which one?
I am moving to OR soon…I want to sell my car for
a reliable name brand motorbike or scooter…Which models should I look at?
Keeping in mind…
* I won’t be going on rough terrain ever.
* It doesn’t have to be super fast – safety & handling are key.
* I’m 110lbs & not a wimp but don’t want to struggle too much if it tips over.
* I’ll be using it mostly around town, however longer distance commutes are in the cards (About 70 mile ones).
* At or under ,000
Thank you so much for any advice ![]()

Sounds like you need a cruiser motorcycle. The sport bikes put all my weight on my wrists, so they’re not comfortable for me to ride very far. Go with a Japanese brand, Honda, Suzuki, and Kawasaki are all good reliable brands. At only 110 lbs, you won’t need a big motor bike to run at highway speeds. Something between 500 and 750 cc’s should be about right.
Honda Rebels are typically starter motorcycles, and start new at 00. If you decide you like one, there are lots of used ones for sale by people who are moving up to a bigger bike. If you buy one and decide its too small, you can always resell it for about what you paid for it. I also like the Suzuki GZ250 and TU250X. Both of these are also considered beginner bikes, but probably will work for what you need one for.
There are also lots of used motorcycles with nothing wrong with them from the ’80′s and ’90 that probably won’t have a high price. You just have to be careful in making sure there’s nothing wrong with them, since most shops won’t service the older bikes anymore.
My best advice is to go to the local motorcycle store and talk with the salespeople. They can help you pick out a bike that fits your needs. Sit on some of the showroom bikes and see what you fell comfortable on. Most shops also sell used motorcycles, which will help keep you under the 00 dollar limit. Or you can pick one out at the shop you like, and look for a used one around your area. Good luck!
