Helmets for car occupants?
Does it really make sense that people who travel in cars over 40 miles an hour don’t wear helmets?
Custom seems to make it something that is not questioned, like years ago when alcohol soused drivers got into ‘accidents’.
Especially with these newer fuel efficient small cars, don’t you think if the carmakers are going to sell these aluminum cans for people to ride in they should also throw in some helmets in the deal?
If your answer is, just wear seat belts, I say we need something extra over that, and not to relie on air bags that are complex and dangerous by themselfs.
I do not mean something heavy, like a motorcycle helmet, no just some light extra protection, say the size of construction worker helmets, and affordable, like 20 dollars.

Do you wear a helmet when you drive??? I bet you do. How about shoulder pads and shin guards too??
Ok, if you want to wear a helmet in your car, go ahead. I think most cars today with their safety cages, front/side/curtain/knee airbags, seatbelts with pretensioners, collapsable stearing columns, and knee bolsters is more than enough to protect you.
The helmets would do no good without a racing seat with side bracing to keep the head from traveling from side to side. Without this, the added weight of the helmet would break your neck.
You would also need a 5 point harness and a Hans Device. Again, without these, the added weight of the helmet would break your neck. Dale Earnhardt didn’t have a Hans device and his seat-belt slipped. The weight of the helmet caused his head to whip forward, breaking his neck.
A helmet would also restrict your hearing and vision, possibly causing a crash. Every driver would need a spotter.
So without all the rest of the equipment, a helmet would do you no good.
You must not remember the old boats we used to drive. They were the death traps. Granted, the new cars fold up in a crash, but this is by design. They are called crush zones. These crush zones absorb the energy of an impact.
The old cars were too solid. Lots of weight, but nothing to absorb the impact. I would rather be the one to survive the crash, not my car. That’s what insurance is for.
Other safety features that the old cars didn’t have
Front and side air bags
Seat belt pre-tensioners
Anti-lock brakes
Traction control
Stability control.
You know, I think you’re right. You probably should wear a helmet when you drive.
This is absolutely astounding. I used to jokingly say that before you know it, they’ll make you wear a helmet to drive a car.
Let’s have umpire-style chest protectors, face masks, neck braces, and steel-toed shoes to go along with the helmets. Better yet, why not require everyone to wear suits of armor?
This is starting to get a little ridiculous.
I’m all for a helmet, surely they can invent something thin, yet safe. . . . . . good idea. . . . cheers.
