How much does it cost to buy a motorbike in Haiti?
Question by jkurz2008: How much does it cost to buy a motorbike in Haiti?
Anyone have a rough estimate of the cost of functioning motorbike in Haiti, specifically in Port-au-Prince? Better yet, do you know a specific vender? Any advice is helpful.
I’m pretty sure 14million yen (~$ 140,000) is not the right answer.
It’s true, riding a bike there is pretty scary, but LOTS of people have bikes. Maybe that’s something that’s recently happened since you moved?
Especially in the provinces, it’s often the only source of equity that people have.

Question by harry216921: How can I tell if the electrical system on my motorbike is AC or DC?
How can I tell if the electrical system on my motorbike is AC or DC? (Honda XR650R)
I should note that the XR650R doesn’t have battery, and a lot of them run the lights and ignition off AC

I lived in P-au-P for 2 years and I don’t remember seeing any motorcycle shops.. or many motorcycles either… because riding a bike in Haiti would be SUICIDE.. those people are CRAZY when it comes to driving… riding a bike there would be a really BAD idea.
Well, almost every vehicle made uses DC current, so I would guess your motorcycle does as well.
DC. DC is direct current such as from a battery. AC is alternating current such as in a house. SO, unless you’ve got a bike with a generator or that hooks up to an extension cord, your bike is DC.
********If you’ve got one that hooks to an extension cord, I want to know two things.
1. How long is the extension cord?
2. How do you keep the cord from getting tangled up when you run out of cord and turn around to go the other way?
If it runs on a battery it is DC. If your ride is limited by the length of the cord connecting you to the wall socket you are running on AC.
12 VDC is standard, however your alternator/stator puts out an AC voltage that gets rectified to DC.
If you want to check for yourself, get a voltmeter and test it where you need.
I like the idea of the extension cords guys. Your bike’s got what they call a magneto, this is where the bike gets it’s electrical current from. It is measured in DC current. It works on the same principal as an alternator.
Being the R model, I think that yours is actually AC.
My father-in-law has a late 90′s XR400R that we did a street-legal kit on, and we had to install a regulator/rectifier on the bike because of the need for a battery (the stator wouldn’t push the lights, brake light, and horn at the same time with the install of a brighter headlight).
So with that being said, I would assume that your bike is also AC. THe bike has a regulator installed, but not a rectifier (turns AC into DC). You can purchase a reg/rect from many places like BajaDesigns, 4strokesonly, or one from the XR650L would most likely fit it!
The easiest way to tell would be to use a multimeter. Set it to read DC volts, then remove the headlight or taillight and read your voltage while the bike is running. If you get 11-13V, then it is DC. if you get a really low number (0-2ish), select the meter to read AC Volts and then it will probably read 11-13V. If you select AC Volts on a DC voltage, it will read 0V.
Hope this helps
