Scooter wont start, very smokey?
My 50cc Scooter (2nd hand, 2001 model) won’t start again this morning, it started doing this about a week ago but has been starting after several attempts until this morning when it just stopped.
I asked a question about this same scooter back in December and at the time (late Dec) had a brand new Carb fitted and in early December had a new spark plug fitted and the scooter de-restricted.
Earlier this week, for the first time since new carb, the scooter wouldn’t start at first attempt in the morning, after a couple of tries with the electric starter though it kicked in. It’s always been a little smokey (i’ve been told it means it’s running too rich but don’t have the tool to adjust the fuel/air mixture on the carb) so haven’t worried about that too much.
On Friday night on my way home from work it suddenly lost power on the A4 at 40mph until I released it to half throttle and it seemed ok again, then at the next set of traffic lights it just conked out slowly, first a very very weak turnover noise before stopping completely.
After an hour of sitting around miles from home it started again, hurrah, and made it back. Yesterday it ran fine though the oil light came on so this morning I put some more in it (2 stroke) and I ran out of petrol (so put some in last night – the petrol warning light does not work).
Then (finally there – sorry about the long story) this morning it just wouldn’t start after 15 mins of trying and putting in new oil (after several attempts remember last nights light so stuck about 1/2-3/4 of a litre in). It managed to get to the really really weak turn over noise again, at this stage loads of smoke coming out the exhaust, almost sounded like a backfire at one point too but not sure as had helmet on.
Any idea what could be causing this after such short period since new carb + spark plug? What would cause a possible backfire? Where can I get a tool to adjust the fuel/air mixture and pleaaase help me ![]()
Hi BMW,
Thanks for advice. Whats “the plug” – do you mean the Spark Plug? Also it ran for a further 20 miles after I filled up with Petrol once it ran out, would this not negate the problem of unmixed oil this morning?

You run out of gas, so that all the oil was not mixed well trying to burn, causing the smoke. Try to pull the plug and the engine to roll off any dirt there, and try again.
Smoking is more than likely that the excess of 2 times. I am a bit ‘confused you are mixing the two-stroke petrol directly into the tank or have a separate tank, the latter provided the oil pump is working properly, avoid mixing too much 2 stroke, the first is open types of errors. But my 2 strokes (when there was an oil lamp) that refers to the low rolling oil not oil 2 tiempos.Mi guess is that as the rich carbohydrates has been operating since it was installed, engine exhaust and probably need to de -coke, gently stick a stick in the exhaust pipe if the final mix is covered with a round black, sticky mud that could be the problem. Most carbohydrates can be adjusted with a screwdriver, but are sensitive to changes that may be best to get a professional in the sense hacerlo.BTW BMW candle
